On bended knee for SolMate’s sole

The Sole of SolMate

We’ve spent the last 11 days in Mazatlan hanging around and tidying up SolMate, and getting ready to head south once again. Wendy has been attending a cruisers’ yoga class here at Marina Mazatlan whilst Mark has signed up as a net controller for the Southbound Net,  a high-frequency marine radio “chat room.”

There have been other duties as well, including a very detailed application of boric acid powder to every nook and cranny Wendy could reach, in pursuit of Blattella germanica.

In the meanwhile Mark was on his knees, working on the sole (boat floor) of SolMate. Right, a new photo of our efforts of soul-cleansing.

Our slipmates, Don and Lenna of TG Wazoo, recommended I do not try to revarnish the sole. Instead Don (who formerly ran a paint store) suggested I polish it with teak oil. “You don’t want to become a slave to keeping your sole pretty,” he said.

I woke up at about 6:30 am local time and made my way aft where Wendy was piloting SolMate into the dawn. She’d been at the helm since 2am and was ready, I thought, for some sleep. We still had about 15 miles to go to Mazatlan.

December 18, 2008Last time we did this we were going the opposite way, from Mazatlan to La Paz. My brother Neal, a very experienced skipper, was along to help us with the 250 nautical mile trip.
