Sailing past the Sierra Gigantes

This is a shameless post in order to brag about our fabulous crossing and also our sail down the Baja coast to Puerto Escondido. It was exhilarating.

This after 6 weeks of recomissioning Wendaway after a lengthy refit including a complete engine rebuilding by master mechanic Omar Garza.

So we were ready to be exhilarated. Have a look at the photo, left. Great wild energy coming off the mountains, wind blowing 15-20 knots from the north, Wendaway under genoa and main.

AirOps Dave in Puerto Escondido

We’re now in company of our friends Merry and Dave on SV AirOps. Today Dave came over and helped me get my balky outboard motor started.  I was being far too cautious about digging deep into the carburator. There were tiny pieces inside I didn’t want to muck with.

But for Dave, the small watch-like pieces were an invitation to dig deeper. After a couple of hours, zing! It started.

Yesterday afternoon we went to a potluck at the Singlar Marina here. It’s quite remarkable how civic-minded the folks here are. The potlucks happen week in, week out; there are many special events (like the Loreto Fest) and charitable activities to help school kids of the area.

It’s a fabulous area, which accounts for postings like this and hundreds of others on a variety of other blogs.

Puerto Escondido (which means Hidden Port in Spanish) is also a hidden jewel.  Even at the busiest time of year it never feels crowded.
